The work
The Yuan shi was compiled under Song Lian in the early Ming. Its two calendrical chapters treat of the making of the Shoushi calendar and its procedures.
What it preserves
It contains the methods of the Shoushi, in the “discussion” and the “canon” alike.
The methods of Guo Shoujing and Wang Xun survive here: the dropping of the grand epoch, third-order interpolation and the arc-and-arrow method are all found in it.
Why it lasted so long
The Shoushi was used 363 years; its precision and stability can be judged from this treatise. For the calendar itself it is the first-hand source.
