Zhang Zhouxuan and the Daye calendar
The Daye calendar was made by Zhang Zhouxuan and came into use in 597 CE, lasting until the fall of the Sui in 618.
He had once debated the calendar with Liu Xiaosun and later made his own, replacing the Kaihuang. His calendar and Liu Zhuo’s Huangji were contemporaries and rivals — a famous case of the Sui.
Assessment
It was used to the end of the Sui; the Tang replaced it with the Wuyin calendar. Sui calendrical work advanced through dispute and prepared the ground for the Tang.
