Development
The Guantian calendar was made by Huang Houqing, promulgated in 1092 CE, replacing the Fengyuan and used until 1102.
Its name means “observing the heavens,” a sign of the Song emphasis on measurement.
Calendrical activity in the Song
The Northern Song changed its calendar more than ten times in one dynasty — rare in history. It shows both diligence and the limits of the old methods.
